Geographically located to give easy
access to all other parts of Cornwall e.g. the main town
of St Austell is 35miles from Launceston (on the border
with Devon), and 51 miles from Lands End ( the last place
in the county and the country!). The main A30 goes through
Mid Cornwall and it is the location of the airport, and
with the mainline rail station at St Austell it is well
served by transport links with the rest of the country.
Mid Cornwall contains both coastlines. The dramatic North
Coast and Atlantic Ocean is the area most favoured by
those seeking adventure sports such as surfing, sailboarding
and kite surfing. The gentler south coast, with its coves
and harbours is popular for swimming, sailing and fishing.
St.Austell and surrounding areas are famous for it’s
clay mining industry which is still a major source of
employment. The world famous Eden Project was designed
and built in a disused china clay extraction pit. A few
miles outside of St.Austell are the picturesque coastal
villages of Fowey, Charlestown and Mevagissey
Newquay, famous for its beaches, water sports and night
life. Fistral beach Newquay is the venue for World Class
Surfing Championships. Newquay is the biggest tourist
destination in Cornwall and there is a huge tourism and
leisure industry in the town.
Just outside of Newquay at St.Mawgan is the domestic
and International airport. Several airlines operate out
of this airport to domestic and European destinations
and further growth is anticipated.
