Bodmin was formerly the County Town of Cornwall and is
the gateway to the very beautiful and dramatic Bodmin
Moor. The highest point on the moor is Brown Willy, Cornwall’s
answer to a mountain! The recent Right to Roam Act has
made the area more accessible for walkers to explore.
There are spectacular views across the moors as you travel
on the main A30.
From the western edge of Bodmin Moor cyclists, walkers
and horse riders can access the Camel Trail which follows
the route of a disused railway line to Wadebridge and
then on to Padstow. Padstow is the unspoilt fishing village
made famous by celebrity chief Rick Stein and also the
traditional Obby Oss celebrations on 1st May.
Other famous locations in North Cornwall include Port
Isaac (Port Wenn in Doc Martin), Boscastle (The Seaside
Parish) and The Jamaica Inn on Bodmin Moor from the novel
of the same name by Daphne DuMaurier. Also, Tintagel,
forever linked to the legend of King Arthur as reputably
being his birth place. The ruins of the 13th century castle
offers breathtaking views over the dramatic North Cornwall
coast.
A little further up the coast Bude and it’s surrounding
area is unspoilt and the untamed breakers at Widemouth
Bay are a surfers dream! All your surfing, cycling and
walking needs are well catered for in this area including
canoeing and kayaking on the Bude Canal.
Launceston on the Devon and Cornwall border was the
capital of the county. It is dominated by Launceston Castle
and is the only walled town in Cornwall. From here the
main A30 leads down through the county of Cornwall.
