West Cornwall

The West Cornwall region was traditionally the major tin mining area of Cornwall. You can see the remains of the engine houses throughout the area, both inland and on the coast, and they have become one of the recognisable symbols of Cornwall.

The two peninsulas of The Lizard , the most southerly point in Britain, and Lands End, known as the end of Britain, are to be found here.

The Minack Theatre is the most famous cliff theatre in Britain, carved into the granite cliff overlooking Porthcurno Bay. The bay is typical of the coastline and beaches of the area where in summer, you can find stretches of clean white sand and sparkling blue sea reminiscent of the Caribbean. The water temperature is raised by the warming influence of the Gulf stream. Because of this the climate of West Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly is particularly temperate and you will see many of the local gardens being able to grow tropical plants.

Newlyn is Cornwalls leading fishing port. It has also been a favourite haunt of artists for over a century, as also is nearby St Ives where the Tate St Ives opened in 1993.

Penzance is the largest town in the area. From here you can set out by air or sea for the beautiful Isles of Scilly. Penzance looks across to the dramatic St Michaels Mount, an island connected to the mainland at Marazion by a causeway exposed at low tide.

Helston is one of the Cornish stannary (mining) towns. It is most famous for the Flora Dance each May. A historic market town it is the western gateway to the Lizard peninsula

Redruth and Camborne both have stations on the mainline rail route from Penzance to the rest of the country.

Falmouth and surrounding area is a popular sailing and yachting centre and is the third largest natural harbour in the world. Falmouth Docks is still a working dock yard and has dry docks for the maintenance and refurbishment of large vessels.

The beautiful cathedral city of Truro is the centre for tourism, commerce and administration for the County of Cornwall, and is a shopper’s paradise. The Hall For Cornwall is a major entertainment venue for the County. Truro has a mainline train station and the major hospital for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
